Berwick and Central Catholic both enter Friday’s week 3 matchup looking for their first win of the season.

Berwick, whose week 1 matchup against Chalmette was cancelled due to Hurricane Isaac, fell in its first game of the year last week to Morgan City, 28-0.

Central Catholic slipped to 0-2 after last week’s 44-2 loss to White Castle on the road.

CCHS coach David Fuhrer said while his squad has not reached panic mode, they know they need to start winning soon.

“I thought we had a couple good days of practice,” he said.

He also said the squad, which has been plagued by injuries, will have help this week with the return of standout wide receiver Dontrell Brown, as well as Justin Arceneaux.

Fuhrer also said quarterback Josh Singleton will be back under center after sitting out week 2.

While his squad has broken down film on Berwick, he said that the Eagles’ coaching staff has spent a lot of time in practice this week working on things such as stopping the run.

The Eagles have struggled during the first two weeks to stop the run game as they gave up more than 520 yards in a week 1 loss to Loreauville, and while they improved in week 2, the squad still surrendered more than 200 yards on the ground in week 2.

He expects to see more of the run from Berwick this week.

“I expect them to try to run the ball against us because everybody else has,” he said.

As for Berwick, head coach Craig Brodie Sr. said his squad is preparing for an athletic Eagles squad.

“They’re always very athletic and offensively, they spread the ball out, and they try to get their athletes in space,” he said.

He said the Eagles use their athleticism to make other teams’ defenses miss tackles while also running a lot of wide receiver and tailback screens as well as quarterback draws.

“You don’t want to over pursue and you got to be careful,” he said.

While his opponent has struggled to stop the run, Brodie said that in addition to the Eagles leaving their defense on the field a while, the competition the Eagles faced was a big factor.

“They’ve played two pretty good teams, too,” Brodie said. “Very good teams.”

On defense, Brodie said Central Catholic runs essentially the same defense as Morgan City with a three man front and bringing pressure from the outside.

Berwick also is looking for a better performance against the Eagles than in 2011 when the squads squared off and CCHS took a 47-0 victory against Berwick.

“We didn’t have a whole lot of luck against them last year, and we’re much improved (this year) so hopefully we’ll give them a better game,” Brodie said.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
