The captain of the fishing vessel My Grandkids contacted Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at about 8 p.m., reporting that a crewmember was suffering symptoms associated with a stroke.
An MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans located the vessel and successfully hoisted the man onto the aircraft. The man was transported to awaiting emergency medical personnel at Houma-Terrebonne Airport. He was transferred to West Jefferson Hospital in Marrero.
“This type of hoist was extremely challenging,” said Lt. Anthony Guido, a pilot on the flight. “Mission success hinges on the proficiency and training of our crews. This is why we train every day.”
The man was in stable condition at the time of the transfer, according to a Coast Guard press release.
