Former journalism professor

BATON ROUGE – Former director of the LSU School of Journalism Dr. John Merrill died Sept. 20.

He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. His main teaching career was at the University of Missouri. He also was on the faculties of Northwestern State, Texas A&M and University of North Carolina. He retired from LSU in 1990.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy and five children.

ROTC commandant

BATON ROUGE – Services for former LSU ROTC commandant Col. Lawrence Fitzmorris will be at Arlington National Cemetery. He died Sept. 17.

Retired from the U.S. Army, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War and held the Bronze Star and other medals of valor. After retiring from the Army he served at LSU as associate athletic director for academics. He later worked in a similar capacity at the University of Florida.

Survivors include his wife Ann, a son and a daughter.

Arrangements are by McKoon, Newnan, Ga.

Employment trainer

LAFAYETTE – Services for former Lafayette Parish director of employment and training Leonard Lee Broussard will be Monday. He died Sept. 20 at age 95.

He worked for the Louisiana Department of Labor Division of Employment Security before becoming the parish’s first director and organizing and implementing the employment and training program still in use.

Urologist

SHREVEPORT – Services for urologist Dr. Bendel Johnson will be Monday. He died Sept. 21 at age 74.

He had a private practice for more than 20 years, than worked in occupational medicine before becoming medical director of Health Plus of Louisiana. He was on the Willis-Knighton Health System board for more than 20 years.

He was active in professional, civic and church organizations and was a long-time member of the Louisiana National Guard.

Survivors include his wife Shelby, a son and two daughters.

All-American basketball player

ALEXANDRIA – Services for former small college All-American basketball player Happy Mahfouz will be Wednesday. He died Sept. 22 at age 80.

He was a member of the Halls of Fame at Springhill College and the University of Little Rock. He was the most valuable player of the 1955 Gator Bowl basketball tournament an All Gulf States Conference member and All-American.

Survivors include his wife Joan and a daughter.
