The faculty and residents of Morgan City Healthcare Center on Justa Street in Morgan City gathered today for their upcoming “Fall Fest” festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20. The festival is to benefit an area person’s fight with breast cancer. MORGAN CITY, La. — A patient undergoing treatment for breast cancer will receive the proceeds from the Morgan City Health Care Center’s annual fall festival Oct. 20.
To determine who the recipient will be, letters are being solicited through Oct. 8 nominating patients. The patient or someone else may make the nomination, but the person receiving the money must live in Morgan City or the surrounding area. The nomination letter must state why the patient should receive the donation.
Festival organizers Colette Canty and Chyral Whitehead said events kick off at 10 a.m. Oct. 20 with a walk that residents of the nursing home and the public are invited to attend. The walk will be followed by free food, games and a cake walk.
Events to raise money include a silent auction, a booth selling breast cancer awareness items and a $1 dunk tank in which the center’s administrator will be the target. Businesses interested in donating money toward the festival or merchants who would like to donate items to the auction should call Canty or Whitehead at 985-384-1726.
They will not accept calls about nominations letters. Those should be mailed to 740 Justa St., Morgan City, LA 70380. Letters arriving after Oct. 8 will not be considered.
According to the Susan G. Koman in 2012, it is estimated there will be 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer among U.S. women and 39,510 deaths.
Breast cancer in men is rare, but it does happen.
Also this year, it is estimated there will be 2,190 new cases of breast cancer among U.S. men along with 410 deaths from the disease.
The signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women. Some women have no signs that they can see. If you experience any of these symptoms, see a doctor:
—A lump, hard knot or thickening.
—Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening.
—Change in breast size or shape.
—Dimpling or puckering of the skin.
—Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple.
—Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast.
—Nipple discharge that starts suddenly.
—New pain in one spot.
At the present time, scientists believe that breast cancer is caused by a combination of both known and unknown factors including genetics, lifestyle choices (such as diet and alcohol use) and reproductive factors.
