Berwick’s struggles began early as North Vermilion’s Riley Maturin picked off a pass just three plays into the game and ran it back for a 21 yard touchdown. From there on out, the game’s mood was set.
Berwick turned the ball over on five of their eight first-half possessions. Two of the remaining possessions resulted in punts, and the final Berwick possession ended at halftime.
While Berwick recovered a North Vermilion fumble in the first half, Berwick fumbled one play later. North Vermilion turned the turnover into points as Taylor Abshire scored on a three yard run.
Following another Berwick fumble, North Vermilion scored again on a Kenneth Johnson 18 yard run.
Berwick’s next series ended in another fumble that North Vermilion’s Maturin recovered. North Vermilion again turned the turnover into a touchdown.
In the second quarter, North Vermilion’s Drake Morvant, filling in at quarterback for injured Joe Duhon, completed the ball to Dade Dieterich for a 37 yards and a touchdown.
North Vermilion added two more first-half touchdowns via a 27-yard interception return by Seth Patin and a 40-yard dash by Broussard while lined up a punt.
“During practice this week, we told him that if he saw their return squad turn and head downfield, to go ahead and take the run,” North Vermilion head coach Tommy Byler said. “I can’t fault him for doing what he was coached to do.”
North Vermilion would put up one second-half touchdown in the third quarter, while Berwick recorded its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter via a run by Berwick sophomore Jeremy Boudreaux run.
Boudreaux led the Berwick rushing attack with four carries for 43 yards, while quarterback Bobby Boudreaux completed four of 10 attempts for 60 yards but tossed one interception.
Chaz Russo led the Berwick receivers with two catches for 44 yards.
Berwick will host Hanson Thursday in a non-district matchup.
