MORGAN CITY — Central Catholic swept West St. John in three games Tuesday, 25-19, 25-8, 25-6 in both teams’ Division 5, District 5 opener.

Central Catholic, the No. 2 team in Division 5 according to the latest power rankings released Tuesday, was led by Meo Knight’s 12 kills, a dig and two solo blocks, while Caroline Byrne contributed 35 assists, three aces and a dig.

Other top Lady Eagle performers included Brie Hill, nine kills and a block assist; Gee Garrett, seven kills; Celine Flores, five kills, an ace and six digs; Amanda Barron, three kills, a set, three digs and a solo block; Abbie Bergeron, an ace and 12 digs; and Brittany Longman, six aces and a dig; and Olivia Crawford, six digs.

Central Catholic (14-8) will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Assumption High for a 5 p.m. matchup. The game originally was supposed to be played earlier this season but had to be postponed because of Hurricane Isaac.

Berwick falls

to Vanderbilt

The Berwick High volleyball team fell on the road Tuesday to Vanderbilt, 3-0 (13-25, 10-25, 16-25), in district action.

Elizabeth Hover led Berwick with three kills, digs and blocks each as well as two assists and an ace, while Abigail Askew added four kills and blocks each. Other Lady Panther contributors included Abigail Ohlin, two kills, an ace and eight digs; Elle Arcemont, a kill and dig each and two blocks; and Rebecca Richard, six assists and three digs; and Dianna Grace Guarisco, five digs.

Berwick (5-15 overall; 1-3 in district) resumed district action today when it traveled to Franklin for a match against Franklin High. Junior varsity play began at 4 p.m., followed by varsity action at 5 p.m.
