Morgan City High School went 2-3 at the Newman Tournament Saturday as the squad faced strong competition in many of its games.
The Lady Tigers picked up wins against Lakeshore, 25-17, 25-21, and McDonough 35, 25-15, 25-14 but fell to Notre Dame, 13-25, 21-25, Assumption, 18-25, 20-25 and St. Scholastica 16-25, 19-25.
Lakeshore is ranked in the top 10 in Division 3, according to the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, while Notre Dame, the defending Division 4 state champion, is ranked second in Division 4. Assumption and St. Scholastica are ranked in the top 10 in Division 2. Morgan City is 12th in Division 2.
Against Notre Dame, Kloé Liner had a productive game for the Lady Tigers with two aces, seven digs, two kills and an assist, while Marilynn Bailey turned in three aces, three digs and a kill.
Other top Lady Tigers’ contributors included Jaiveianna Jones, five kills and a dig; Katelyn Adams, seven assists and three digs; May Grogan, a block, two kills and a dig; and Savannah Loupe, two aces and five digs.
Against Lakeshore, Jones recorded four aces, nine kills, a block and seven digs, while Bailey had three aces, three kills, six digs and an assist.
Other top Lady Tigers’ contributors included Adams, three kills, 13 assists and two digs; Liner, four kills and six digs; and Loupe, six digs and an ace.
In the loss to Assumption, Adams turned in a kill, nine assists, three digs and an ace, while Jones recorded two kills, two blocks and five digs.
Other top MCHS contributors included Grogan, four kills and a block; and Liner, three kills and four digs.
In the win against McDonough 35, Taylor Prince turned in an impressive seven aces as well as six assists, a kill and a dig, while Layne Reynaud also had a solid game with three aces, two kills, six assists and a dig.
Other top MCHS contributors included Brandi Ingram, an ace, four kills and two digs, and Bailey, two aces, a kill and four digs.
Against St. Scholastica, Ingram led MCHS with three aces, six kills and three digs, while Bailey added three aces, a kill and two digs.
Other top Lady Tigers’ performers included Jones, a block and five kills; Liner, five kills and an assist; and Reynaud and Prince with eight and seven assists, respectively.
Morgan City (19-16 overall, 3-3 in District 6, Division 2) will return to district action today when it hosts Ellender Memorial for Senior Night. Freshmen action will begin at 4 p.m., with junior varsity and varsity play to follow.
