PATTERSON — The Patterson Lumberjacks celebrated Homecoming 2012 in grand
style, routing Jeanerette, 72-0, Friday at the Sugar Dome. Patterson (5-3, 2-2 District 9-3A) wasted little time getting the party started when Mykel Jones took the second play of the game for a touchdown on a 73-yard run.
Jeanerette (0-8) gave up one of two first quarter safeties on its first possession, and the rout was on.
Daylon Charlot caught a 20- yard pass from quarterback Denzel Johnson to capitalize on the Tigers’ turnover, and with 9:20 remaining in the first quarter, Patterson led 16-0.
After JHS failed to convert on a fourth-and-6 at its own 24- yard line, Patterson struck
again as Larry Turner broke free on a 14-yard run with 5:24 to play. The kick failed for a 22- 0 PHS lead.
Johnson found Jedrick Gunner open for an 18-yard score with 4:01 left in the first quarter for a 29-0 lead.
After another Jeanerette safety with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter, Patterson scored again less than a minute later when Johnson ran in a 6-yarder with
2:30 to play for a 38-0 margin. Johnson was 5-of-7 passing for 109 yards and three touchdowns, and he carried twice for 13 yards and a score.
Johnson hooked up with Charlot on a 9 yard score with 53 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point was no good on the play, but Patterson led 44-0 after the first quarter.
Johnson, like many of the starters, went to the sideline after the opening quarter.
“It’s Homecoming, and it’s good to see the kids have fun and everybody played,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “We had kids get into the scoring column who hadn’t scored all year. You feel bad for the other team in a situation like this, but it’s hard to tell those kids who practice hard all week and never get to play not to play hard.”
Patterson got touchdowns from Spencer Landry and Tristen Ausama to take a 58-0 lead into halftime.
Sirbatian Charles and Malik Bass scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the ’Jacks.
Patterson outgained Jeanerette 431 to 31 yards and outgained the Tigers, 322 to
three on the ground.
Landry was the leading rusher with three carries for 76 and a touchdown, while Jones had 73 yards on one carry and a touchdown. Ausama had 49 yards on two carries and a score.
Charlot was the top pass catcher with three catches for 47 and two touchdowns, while Jones had a catch for 44 yards.
Patterson will host rival Frankin (4-4, 1-3) in District 9-3A play this Friday.
The Hornets beat Erath 18-15 on the last play of the game last Friday when Lashon Johnson caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from FHS quarterback Jarion Brown as time expired.
