Killed in action

WHITEHALL – Services for Corporal Joseph Fontenot, missing in Korea since June 28, 1951 will be Saturday. He was killed in action at age 20. His remains were recently found and identified.

He was with the U.S. Army’s 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Louis, Wash. when assigned to the Korean War. His family operated a strawberry farm.

Survivors include two sisters.

Arrangements are by Ourso, Gonzales.

Former LSU athletic official

BATON ROUGE – Services will be Thursday for long-time LSU assistant athletic director and business manager of athletics Jack Gilmore. He died Oct. 22 at age 87.

He came to LSU from a similar position at the University of Oklahoma. and held his post for almost 30 years. He was active in a number of civic organizations, including Red Cross and Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife Mary Alice, two daughters and several step-children.

Arrangements are by Rabenhorst.

Dog show judge

SHREVEPORT – Services for international dog show judge Mary Roppolo will be Friday. She died Oct. 22 at age 74.

She was a past president and delegate to the AKC for Shreveport Kennel Club and and an AKC and international dog show judge for many years. She was a breeder of Doberman Pinschers.

Survivors include two sons and two daughters.

Arrangements are by Osborn.

Long-time lawyer

SHREVEPORT – Services for long-time lawyer Donald Baker will be Friday. He died Oct. 22 at age 97.

He was a 70-year member of the state bar and was on the board of the Louisiana Assn. for the Blind for 15 years.

Survivors include a son and four daughters.

Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

Car rental pioneer

SHREVEPORT – Services for car rental pioneer Joseph Scoggin, Jr. will be Friday. He died Oct. 22 at age 93.

He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He started one of the first car rental companies in north Louisiana after the war and became one of the first licensees in Warren Avis’s Rent A Car System. His company continues to operate Avis and Budget Rent A Car franchises in Shreveport and Monroe.

Survivors include his wife LaVaughn and several children.

Arrangements are by Hillcrest Memorial.
