The Lumberjacks, the No. 31 seed, will travel to Crowley Friday to meet Notre Dame, the No. 2 seed.
“We got the second seed, but we also got someone we know,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “We have played them in the playoffs before, so we feel like we have a good game plan. I think we matchup with them pretty well.”
Since 2001, Notre Dame (8-1, 5-0 District 4-3A) has been seeded either No. 1 or No. 2 seven times.
During the past 11 years, Notre Dame has not entered the playoffs below the No. 6 seed.
“We don’t get caught up in the rankings,” Minton said. “If you make the playoffs, you have to look at your opponent, break them down and come up with a game plan, so it really doesn’t matter where the team is ranked.”
Patterson (7-3, 4-2 District 9-3A) has been in playoff mode for the past several weeks. The ’Jacks won their last four games to secure a playoff berth. Patterson routed Erath, 35-7, Friday in its regular season finale.
“I think we may have played our most compete ball game of the season,” Minton said. “I feel that we are peaking at the right time.”
Senior quarterback Denzel Johnson threw for 378 yards and five scores in the victory. He completed 25 of 36 passes with no interceptions in the impressive outing.
Wide receiver Daylon Charlot caught eight passes for 178 yards. Two of the passes were for scores. Senior tight end Deondre Skinner added five catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman Mykel Jones had four catches for 71 yards, including a touchdown.
“If we continue to throw the ball like we have the last couple weeks, then we will be a tough matchup for anyone,” Minton said.
Pios head coach Lewis Cook agreed.
“Usually, you have a team that’s struggling through the year that gets in there at No. 31,” Cook said early this week. “Usually it’s a team that might have won three or four games; Patterson has won seven games.
“We’re going to have to put a really good game together to have a chance to win.”
Notre Dame hasn’t lost since the second week of the season when the Pios fell 14-10 to Class 4A power Teurlings Catholic. Notre Dame eased by South Beauregard, 42-6, last week.
The Pios high-powered offense comes into Friday’s game averaging 30.2 points per game.
“We were very young on defense this year,” Minton said. “But the kids understand the scheme now, and they’re playing fast. In the last 12 quarters we have given up one touchdown, so I think we have come a long way.”
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gardiner Memorial Stadium. The winner of that game will get the winner of No. 15 Westlake and No. 18 St. Charles in a regional contest next week.
Friday’s game will be carried on KQKI 95.3 FM with pregame set for 6:45 p.m.
