Morgan City man accused of fleeing accident scene

MORGAN CITY, La. -- Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco of the Morgan City Police Department reported the following arrests over the weekend:

—Roberto Cruz, 29, of Brashear Avenue, Morgan City, was arrested at 4:27 p.m. Friday at the Berwick Police Department on a charge violating a city court probation warrant. He was released on a $500 bond.

—Jose A. Rivera, 28, of Short Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 5:28 a.m. Saturday on charges of reckless operation, hit and run driving, driver must be licensed and operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the U.S.

Officers were dispatched to a vehicle crash on the Greenwood Overpass at 1:10 a.m. and found a two-vehicle head-on collision. One driver was taken to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene on foot. After investigating, officers determined the other driver was Rivera, who was found later at his residence, arrested and booked into jail where he remains on a $14,000 bond.

—Kumaravel Nadar, 42, of Chirpy’s Lane, Amelia, was arrested at 6:54 p.m. Saturday on La. 70 on charges of careless operation with an accident and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Nadar was arrested at the scene of the crash where the officer learned that he failed to turn at a curve and continued straight into a wooded area near the levee coming to rest, the report stated. He failed a field sobriety and intoxilyzer testing registering .202 grams-percent, the report stated. He remains in jail on a $2,500 bond.

—Charles L. Gash, 58, of Robin Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 6:05 p.m. Sunday on Wren Street on charges of appearing intoxicated in public and simple battery. He remains in jail on a $984 bond.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrests over the weekend:

—Larry Harding, Jr., 38, of Driskell Drive, Berwick, was arrested at 3:58 p.m. Saturday on a charge of disturbing the peace. He was released on bond.

—Douglas Marks Jr., 41, of Oregon Street, Berwick, was arrested at 10:52 p.m. Saturday on a charge of failure to appear in court. He was released on bond.
