Ladle of Hope and Love Soup Kitchen plans to serve a meal on Thanksgiving Day at the Amelia Community Center. Family members, from left are the Rev. The Ladle of Hope and Love Soup Kitchen will serve a feast of turkey, jambalaya, dressing, corn, green beans, yams, desserts and a drink at the Amelia Recreation Center.
Organizer Dori Istre said she and her husband, the Rev. John Istre, a pastor at the Church of God of Prophecy in Patterson, planned the meal because they wanted to give more to the community.
“This started as family with friends trying to make a difference,” Dori Istre said.
She started planning for 100 people, then 200 people. Now, Dori Istre doesn’t exactly know how many people to plan to feed on Thanksgiving, but she doesn’t want to turn anyone away.
To do this, she will need some help. Anyone wishing to make a financial contribution to the project can do so at any branch of Teche Federal Bank in the name of the Ladle of Hope and Love Soup Kitchen. To volunteer your time or to offer other assistance, contact the Istres at 985-395-5401.
Also, the Istres are organizing a coat and blanket drive. Gently used, clean blankets and coats can be dropped off at the Amelia Recreation Center. They will be distributed on Thanksgiving Day.
Dori Istre said she hopes to make the soup kitchen an ongoing activity beginning in January.
