The Morgan City girls’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season on the road Tuesday against East Jefferson, 3-0, while the boys’ fell, 4-2.

Despite the win, Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said his squad played slow and missed multiple scoring opportunities.

Celeste Williams scored the squad’s first two goals in the 16th and 57th minutes, respectively, while Carmen Araujo netted the last one in the 66th minute.

“Our defense played well but also was too relaxed at times,” Patterson said. “Our level of play was determined by our opponent, which should never be.”

In the boys’ matchup, Sergize Flores scored the game’s first goal in the 20th minute before East Jefferson responded with two goals during the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, East Jefferson scored two more goals off Morgan City mistakes. Jose Zuniga scored the Tigers’ last goal following Flores’ corner.

“The depth of East Jefferson’s bench helped them with fresh legs, something we don't have,” Patterson said. “Plus the youth of Morgan City is something for us to build on.”

Both teams travel to Pineville for tournament action this weekend.
