During October and early November, the Board of St. Mary Community Foundation, along with community volunteers, conducted a raffle for a seven-day trip for two to Paris. About 200 tickets were sold. On Nov. 15, the board held a wine and cheese event at the home of Alice and Billy Pecoraro to draw the winning ticket. The winning ticket was pulled by Kayla South, center, Morgan City High School band drum major. Angela Labat of Thibodaux, an employee of McDermott Inc., purchased the winning ticket.
The raffle was to support the St. Mary Parish Community Foundation. Organization board member Alice Pecoraro said funds were being raised for art and music programs in St. Mary Parish schools. Grant applications will be sent to the schools in early January.
About 200 tickets, at $100 each, were sold, entitling Labat to have her choice of either a trip for two to Paris including airfare from Lafayette and seven nights in a hotel or a VIP Suite on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship to Grand Cayman and Cozumel from New Orleans.
The winning ticket was drawn by Kayla South, drum major for Morgan City High School. The high school band, under the direction of Michael Swiber, provided entertainment for the drawing, which was held during a wine and cheese social at Pecoraro’s home. The band played on the front lawn of the home.
Guests included purchasers of the raffle tickets and representatives of the Community Foundation of Acadiana.
In November 2008, the St. Mary Parish Foundation, an official affiliate of Community Foundation of Acadiana, was formally established. The purpose of the St. Mary Parish Foundation is to fund programs which broadly impact St. Mary Parish and to focus on enhancing the quality of life in St. Mary Parish.
As an affiliate, the foundation utilizes the resources, infrastructure and professional management of assets of Community Foundation of Acadiana while utilizing its own board of directors to focus attention on improving the community and growing philanthropy in St. Mary Parish.
The Acadiana board is the same organization which recently honored R.E. “Bob” Mi3ller of Bayou Vista for his community support.
Miller, president and founder of Major Equipment & Remediation, is one of nine persons who received the Community Foundation of Acadiana’s 2012 Leaders in Philanthropy Award.
Making the St. Mary raffle possible are gold sponsors Brenda and Greg Hamer, the Gina and Joe Sanford Family Fund, the Prevost House Bed and Breakfast, and Teche Regional Medical Center, along with silver sponsor Cabot Corp.
