MORGAN CITY — Central Catholic won its season opener against Teurlings Catholic, 62-51 Tuesday.

The win also marked the squad’s first varsity basketball win in as many attempts in the school’s new gym.

The game was close for three quarters as Central Catholic took a 26-24 lead into the half and led 38-33 after three quarters before pulling away in the fourth.

Tyler Hoffpauir, who scored 17 points, led three Eagles who reached double figures.

Other Eagles posting double-digits included Dontrell Brown with 13 and Josh Singleton with 11, while Lamar Grogan and Nick Case added eight points apiece.

Central Catholic (1-0) will return to action Thursday when it hosts Thibodaux. Junior varsity action will begin at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Berwick downs

Highland Baptist

Berwick routed Highland Baptist, 52-26, on the road Tuesday.

Palmer Cox led Berwick (2-4) with 14 points, while Chaz Russo also reached double figures with 11 points. Nick Osburn added six.

In junior varsity action, Berwick’s boys defeated Highland Baptist, 19-18, via Tyler Campbell’s free throw with two seconds remaining in the contest.

Berwick’s boys will return to action Friday when it hosts Ascension Episcopal. Junior varsity action will begin at 5 p.m. and following the girls’ varsity contest, Berwick’s boys’ varsity will take the floor at approximately 7 p.m.

Morgan City edges Franklin

Morgan City picked up a road win against Franklin Tuesday as it edged the Hornets, 44-42.

While Morgan City (5-2) took a 34-18 lead into the half, Franklin outscored Morgan City 24-10 in the second half, including a 15-5 fourth-quarter advantage for the close ending.

Tyrin Watts led Morgan City with 13 points, while other top scorers included Malcolm Watkins, eight; Brady Fryou, seven; Eric Walker, six; and Demarcus Coleman, four.

Morgan City will return to action Friday when they travel to Plaquemine. Freshman action will begin at 5 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity play.
