A Franklin home sustained $300,000 in damages from an early morning fire Sunday.

Franklin Fire Department personnel responded to a structure fire at 7:32 a.m., arriving on the scene within two minutes, Chief Chuck Bourgeois reported.

The call to the 913 Second St. residence warned of possible pet entrapment. Fire fighters found heavy smoke and fire at the rear of the house and called for assistance from Baldwin, Centerville and Chitimacha departments.

They were able to quickly douse the fire in an enclosed rear porch.

Investigation revealed the probable cause was an electrical outlet, and the fire spread to combustible materials nearby, Bourgeois said.

Damage was estimated at $150,000 each to structure and contents.

The chief said a “significant” number of pets died of smoke inhalation. There was smoke and heat damage to much of the home.

Two persons were home at the time of the fire but were not injured.
