BOSSIER CITY – Nine dogs died in an early morning house fire Friday but the people living there got out uninjured.

A resident was awakened by the smell of smoke about 5 a.m. and woke up the other occupants. The fire was in a room behind the house’s carport.

The dogs were in cages in that room and could not be rescued by the occupants or firefighters.

Firefighters said the fire appeared to have started from an electric space heater left too close to a chair.

Officials did not say what breed the dogs were.
