Central Catholic stayed alive at St. Thomas More’s Sunkist Shootout with a 59-38 victory against Ellender Memorial in an elimination game Thursday.
Central Catholic outscored Ellender, who the squad will face at home in a week, in three of the four quarters.
While Central Catholic took a 10-4 lead after a period of play, Ellender outscored the local squad 16-13 in the second quarter, and Central Catholic led just 23-20 at the half.
Central Catholic outscored Ellender 14-8 in the third and 22-10 in the fourth for the final.
Dontrell Brown and Tyler Hoffpauir both reached double figures for the Eagles with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Brent Greed added nine points and Lamar Grogan, seven points along with 12 rebounds.
Central Catholic held a 40-20 rebounding advantage.
“We just gave them one shot, and when they missed it, we got the rebound, which is big for us,” Central Catholic coach Ree Case said. “Rebounding is always a big deal, because we’re not very big.”
In Wednesday’s 63-49 loss to Comeaux, Josh Singleton led Central Catholic with 11 points.
“They’re good, but we didn’t play good,” Case said.
While Case said his squad had opportunities for shots in the game, they just couldn’t make them.
“It was not pretty to see,” he said.
Central Catholic (5-3) continued play today against Teurlings Catholic at 12:30 p.m.
The Eagles already own a 62-51 win against Teurlings Catholic in Central Catholic’s season opener.
Teurlings Catholic staved off elimination by defeating Warren Easton, 68-58.
With a win, the Eagles would advance to Saturday’s consolation finals at 2:30 p.m.
