M C Bank employees gathered recently to recognize one of their 40-year employees. Jimmy O. Johnson began his employment with Morgan City Bank in 1973 as one of their main office couriers. In 1997, he became the Colonial Plaza branch courier.

Johnson is retiring from M C Bank.

Besides his responsibilities with M C Bank, Johnson was able to coordinate and pursue a vast number of community projects in the Tri-city area, for which he received several awards and notoriety.

Johnson is a native of Morgan City. He is a five-year Air Force veteran and was one of the originators of the Disabled Vets Organization of Morgan City. He organized the American Legion basketball team, Sumpter Williams School Blue Devils Athletic Club, was the first black sports writer for all of the Sumpter Williams school sports and The Daily Review in Morgan City along with Rev. Ed Robertson.

Johnson also was the first black radio announcer on KMRC radio in Morgan City. He organized the International League, which was the first black little league baseball team; organized the first black fast pitch league in Morgan City; coached and played in the Catholic Youth Organization; helped to organize Pop Warner League in St. Mary Parish; the AAU basketball team; and took his team to many parts of the country.

Johnson also organized the first summer program in Siracusaville. He was instrumental in forming the Morgan City Male Christian Chorus.

He served on numerous boards and organizations such as Morgan City Housing Authority, Community Neighborhood Youth Program, Convention and Morgan City’s Tourism and Culture Commission. He was recognized in 2006 for 33 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Morgan City youth and basketball programs.

M C Bank officers said the organization is proud of all the loyal years of dedicated service Johnson has given to their organization and the community.
