MORGAN CITY, La. — An awards dinner was held Jan. 18 at the VFW building on Sandra Street in Morgan City in honor of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4222 Americanism contest participants.

The 13 award winners included five elementary school students, one junior high school student, three high school students, three teachers and one police officer.

Americanism categories varied from drawing/coloring, essay completion, Voice of Democracy, with policeman and teachers of the year.

Americanism winners included Abigail Glynn of Bayou Vista Elementary; and Princess Verdin, Grace Fortier and Grant Stansbury, all of Holy Cross Elementary.

The Patriot’s Pen winner was Katelyn Gautreaux of Morgan City Junior High School.

Voice of Democracy winners included Spencer Landry of Patterson High School, first place; Andrew Albritton of Morgan City High School, second place; and John Parker of Central Catholic High School, third place.

Teachers of the year included Sandra Rodrigues, Immanuel Christian School; Karen Tycer, Central Catholic High; and Michelle South, Morgan City High School.

Policeman of the Year was Mark Griffin Sr. of the Morgan City Police Department.

Award presenters were VFW post 4222 members Sherman Whiting, quartermaster, and Theresa Schexnider, ladies auxiliary president.
