The Students of the Year Awards program recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability and citizenship. The program is sponsored by the Louisiana Superintendent of Education through the State Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Sinclair is in Katie Rock’s fifth-grade class, and said Callais, 10, is both humbled and inspired by the honor of being selected the school’s student of the year. She attributes her success to the teachers, faculty and staff, her teacher said.
Callais is the daughter of Jeremy and Casie Callais of Berwick. She is on the principal’s list. The honor student said her parents have taught her the importance of giving to others. “Through Christ, all things are possible” is the saying that she lives by, she said.
Callais is active in service to the community through Holy Cross Elementary School, the Kiwanis Club, St. Mary Outreach and other organizations. She is involved in softball, basketball and cheerleading, played on a tournament softball team and has participated in gymnastics, tennis and volleyball. She is especially proud of initiating a student council at Holy Cross and currently serves as its co-chairman.
Sinclair plans to attend the culinary school at Nicholls State University and eventually open her own bakery. She hopes to use her skills in the kitchen not only to provide for herself, but also to provide for others.
“I hope that my bakery can give to those who do not have food,” she said, adding that she hopes to give back to others so that they can have the joy that she has in her heart.
