MORGAN CITY, La. — City officials are still trying to decide what action they will take to replace the garbage truck that caught on fire Tuesday and is now out of service.

As of this morning, the city had not been able find a rental truck, said City Public Works Director Mike Loupe.

Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi would have to declare an emergency to be able to purchase a truck for the public bid law to not apply to the purchase, Loupe said.

Grizzaffi said he is “looking at all the options,” which includes buying, renting, borrowing, leasing, repairing or purchasing, but he has not made a decision. The official cause of the garbage truck fire has not been determined yet, he said.

The engine of the garbage truck caught on fire on Aucoin Street Tuesday. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital overnight Tuesday to be checked out.

The garbage truck fire caused garbage pickup to be delayed due to the out of service side-loader truck. The city also has another rear-loader truck out of service. The sanitation department is down to two side-loader trucks and two rear-loader trucks.

The garbage pickup schedule in Morgan City is Tuesday and Friday for some residents and Monday and Thursday for other residents.
