MORGAN CITY — In a battle of top 10 teams in Class 1A, No. 1 ranked Central Catholic survived. Barely.
Lucas Duhon of No. 7 Ascension Episcopal missed a three-pointer at the game’s conclusion that would have forced overtime and Central Catholic survived an upset bid by its visitors from Youngsville, 48-45.
While Ascension Episcopal entered the fourth quarter trailing 41-31, Ascension Episcopal used a 14-7 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to set up the late game dramatics.
Central Catholic had just one field goal in the fourth quarter, a bucket by Dontrell Brown, who led the squad with 14 points.
The rest of the Eagles’ points came from the free-throw line where they finished the quarter 5-for-7. The Eagles finished the game 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Central Catholic took a 9-6 lead after a period of play and extended its lead to 26-19 at the end of the second quarter.
Other top scorers for Central Catholic were Nicholas Case and Josh Singleton with 10 points apiece, Tyler Hoffpauir with eight and Brent Green with three.
The Eagles hit six three-pointers, including three by Singleton.
Central Catholic (16-4 overall, 5-0 in District 8-1A) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Gueydan. Boys’ varsity is set for tip-off following the girls’ varsity contest at 5:30 p.m.
Patterson clinches share of District 9-3A title
Patterson was able to hold off a third-quarter Abbeville surge and clinch a share of the District 9-3A crown with a 55-36 victory on the road Friday.
While Patterson raced out to a 14-2 lead and led 26-10 at the half, Abbeville trailed just 35-25 after three quarters.
However, a Patterson 20-11 fourth-quarter advantage put the game away.
Nehemiah Augustus led Patterson with 16 points, while Deondre Skinner added nine.
Other top Patterson scorers included Denzel Johnson and Mykel Jones, eight apiece; and Taylan Grogan, four.
Patterson (13-5, 10-0), who has won six straight contests since losing to Central Catholic on Jan. 11, will take a break from district play Tuesday when it travels to Class 5A New Iberia.
The game is a rematch of an earlier season contest when New Iberia defeated Patterson in the championship of Patterson’s tournament.
Junior varsity boys’ action will begin at 6 p.m. with varsity boys to follow.
Berwick falls to
Berwick fell to Covenant Christian, 58-42, in non-district play Friday in Berwick.
The Panthers were led in the contest by Devin Tabor, who scored 11 points.
Other top contributors for the Panthers were Nicholas Osburn and Audwin Williams with eight points apiece and Chaz Russo and Palmer Cox with six each.
Berwick (6-18 overall, 0-9 district) will return to District 9-3A action Tuesday when it hosts Kaplan. Varsity boys’ action is set for a 7 p.m. start.
Morgan City drops
A third-quarter run helped South Terrebonne in its 46-44 District 8-4A victory against Morgan City Thursday in Bourg.
While Morgan City led 24-20 coming out of halftime, South Terrebonne used a 15-9 third-quarter scoring advantage for a 35-33 advantage.
Both teams put up 11 points in the fourth period.
While Morgan City’s record may stand at 2-6 in district play, the record is deceiving, considering that with the exception of a 55-28 victory against Assumption, every district contest Morgan City has played in has been decided by five points or less.
While the Tigers’ benefitted from the close contest to start district with a 62-59 overtime win against Ellender, lately, the Tigers have been on the tough end of those contests. Thursday’s loss was the second by two points as the Tigers fell to Ellender, 55-53 Tuesday.
Morgan City (13-11 overall) will try to bounce back Tuesday when it hosts Vandebilt Catholic in district play.
