In 2008, Morgan City head volleyball coach Christy Theriot decided to host a “Pink Game” in October to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
For the past five years, the Lady Tigers and their “Pink Game” opponents sold T-shirts and raffle tickets, acquired sponsorships from local companies, sold pink cupcakes and the student body purchased spirit links, pink lanyards and participated in other fundraisers to raise money for the cause.
Other local schools contribute as well.
The Lady Tiger “Paint the Gym Pink” event raised $7,084 in its initial year.
During the past five years, the Lady Tigers, their opponents, and the community have raised more than $50,000 for the cause.
This event has grown significantly and has helped St. Mary Parish residents who suffer with breast cancer.
Funds are used to help provide financial assistance for cancer treatment costs as well as ancillary services required as a result of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Costs may include transportation, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, treatment for side-effects (hormone therapy, treatment for osteoporosis or lymphedema), diagnostics (mammograms) or other follow up scans or tests, physical therapy, etc.
The Lady Tigers’ goal is to continue to raise funds for breast cancer patients and branch out to help local people who have been diagnosed with other forms of cancer.
Theriot and the Lady Tigers already are planning how to expand the 2013 “Paint the Pit Pink” event.
