District revisions to the teacher salary schedule were mandated by Louisiana’s Act 1 of the 2012 Legislative session, which also requires that the amount of annual base pay will not be reduced below the amount of the base salary of the previous year.
The new salary schedule is revenue neutral. The school spends $40.84 million on salaries for certified employees.
The plan impacts 809 teachers, administrators, guidance counselors and librarians.
If the employee received a Compass — teacher evaluation tool — composite score of 2.5 or above (effective: proficient or highly effective) in 2012-13, the employee would receive an additional step for effectiveness, totaling $225 annually.
However, an employee with a score of less than 1.5 (ineffective) will remain at the same base salary for the following school term.
Compass stands for Clear, Overall Measure of their Performance to Analyze and Support Success. It works on a scale of 1.0 to 4.0.
However, areas of critical need will be determined by the superintendent on an annual basis. The board authorized the superintendent to grant additional experience steps for critical need, special skills and/or unique experience up to a maximum of five steps without board approval.
Teachers and administrators, excluding those teaching under a temporary certificate, may earn one step of $225 per year for experience by earning a Compass score of 1.5 or above and being employed for at least one-half of a normal term.
Those under a temporary teaching certificate remain at step 1 until receiving the necessary credentials.
Employees earn an additional step of $225 per year for effective performance earning a Compass score of 2.5 or above.
Employees who are not employed for a normal term may receive a proportionate share of the effectiveness stipend based on the number of days and/or hours worked.
Those with advanced degrees continue to earn higher wages unless they receive a Compass score of less than 1.5 (ineffective).
