MORGAN CITY — The Central Catholic Lady Eagles will begin the Class 1A postseason today when they meet Delhi Charter at home at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles, the No. 4 seed, enter the playoffs with a 21-7 mark and a five-game winning streak. The Lady Eagles won the District 8-1A championship with an 8-0 mark.

Delhi Charter, 14-17, competed in District 3-1A this season where they recorded a 2-6 mark for a fourth-place finish.

The squad enters today’s contest on a five-game losing streak, including a 36-32 loss to Mangham in its regular season finale.

The squad’s last victory was a 47-28 win against Delhi on Jan. 25.

Besides their results, Central Catholic coach Jamarr Garrett said Friday he didn’t know anything about Delhi Charter.

“It’s kind of difficult because you can’t really prepare,” he said. “You really don’t know how to prepare for a team you know nothing about, you haven’t seen play. All you are seeing are scores on the Internet and you try to compare that.”

However, Garrett said he is confident his squad has faced every defense that they will see going forward.

“We’ve seen every defense so far from triangle to box-and-1, 2-3, 1-3-1,” he said. “Everybody’s tried a bunch of different things against us. Hopefully we can adjust as the game goes on.”

Despite the unknowns of what Delhi Charter will present, the Lady Eagles enter the playoffs with an experienced team as they advanced to the quarterfinals as Class 1A’s top-ranked squad a year ago before they were upset against West St. John at home.

“We talked about it the other day and I’m pretty sure all of them, including myself, and I didn’t even coach last year, have a bitter taste in their mouth the way last year ended,” Garrett said. “It could have been better.”

While much of an opponent’s attention is placed on Meo Knight and Randi Brown, the Lady Eagles’ two standout guards, Central Catholic has had others step up, including Abbie Bergeron, who made key buckets for the squad against Vermilion Catholic in the final regular season contest.

“The thing with us, everyone’s so focused on Meo and Randi, you never know which one of these other girls, who apparently do their role very well because, if not, we wouldn’t be 21-7 right now, (will catch fire),” he said. “The other night it was Abbie. Against Hanson, it was Caroline (Byrne). You just never know. The one who I feel is due for a big game is Megan (Landry). She’s been getting in a lot of foul trouble so she hasn’t been on the floor much, but I think she’ll be the next one to step up and make shots for us.”
