The team sponsored by State Farm Agent Amy Falcon of Kenner, “Like a Good neighbor…” won first place in the East St. Mary Parish Kiwanis Club Trivia Contest Friday at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. Chairpersons of the contest, Casie Callais and Selena Shannon, declared the contest a resounding success.
“This is awesome, just look at the community,” Shannon said as the 82 tables filled with contestants.
“We are hoping to make $15,000 to $17,000,” she said.
The money is going to the Adullam Household of Faith in Patterson as well as area high schools to purchase automatic external defibrillators for use in emergency situations.
The Rev. Marty Harden, pastor of Bethel Pentecostal Fellowship Church in Patterson, said the Adullam Household of Faith will provide children of jailed women a home.
There are more than 700 children in Louisiana identified as belonging to jailed women, he said.
The Amy Falcon State Farm Agency team, named “Like A Good Neighbor,” of Kenner won the first place prize of $600 and donated it back to the Kiwanians. The team correctly answered 98 of the 125 questions.
Second place and $300 was won by L-H Printing Co. Inc.’s team “Order of the Phoenix.” The team scored 95 of the 125 questions.
There was a three-way tie for third-place among Hattie Watts Elementary’s “Watts Happening?”, L-H Printing’s “Krewe of L-H” and Morgan City High School’s “MCHS t3.”
The Hattie Watts team won the tie-breaker and $150. The three teams had 94 out of 125 answers correct. They also won the award for the “Smartest Faculty in the Parish,” a special category devised as a challenge among schools.
Teams included up to six members.
Callais said in most places it takes 10 to 15 years to get a contest going to full capacity. “We did it the first year,” she added.
Tim Matte, the only active member of the club who was a charter member, said the event was a first for the 26-year-old club. The trivia contest was the first time the club had gathered so many people together for an event, he said.
“I think it is great exposure for the club,” Matte said. “It is raising the level of exposure for the club and maybe we can get more members.”
Callais said there are about 40 club members.
Nicol Armato of Ironman Staffing’s team, said, “I think it is great. We are having a really good time and the fact that it is for a really bigger cause makes it nicer.”
