Well owner Swift Energy Co. of Houston says the well is intermittently burping oily water about a mile offshore.
Company President Bruce Vincent says the wellhead is ringed with containment boom, which also was set along the shore.
Vincent says only a small amount of oil appears to have escaped the well. He says the well was shut in about five years ago as a weak producer and the company planned to plug it this year.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Carlos Vega says the accident happened about 8 p.m. He did not know whether anyone on the crewboat was injured.
