BERWICK — The defending Division 3 state champion Berwick High School girls’ tennis team started their season with a 6-2 win against South Lafourche Wednesday.

While the Lady Panthers struggled in singles action as they won one of three matches, a 6-0, 6-3 win by Carli Powell against Gabby Pitre, the Lady Panthers won all five doubles matches.

In girls’ doubles play, Berwick’s Claire Parsiola and Mary M. Sanford beat Macy Duplantis and Victoria Dardar 6-2, 6-1, while Emma Gray and Allis Armato defeated Bethany Boura and Lexie Lee 7-6, (7-5), 7-5.

Other doubles’ wins by Berwick included Shereen Richard and Abby Ledet over Victoria Cantrelle and Katelyn Crosby 6-4, 7-5; Jeanne Marie Hidalgo and Abigail Askew over Gracie Mouton and Amber Duet 6-1, 6-0; and Hannah Walker and Maggie Martin over Natalie Dufrene and Amber Duet, 5-7, 6-2, 7-3.

In other girls’ singles action, Berwick’s Signe Parsiola fell to Blake Foret 7-5, 4-6, 3-7, while Berwick’s Carolyn Sanford fell to Crystal Griffin 2-6, 1-6.

In boys’ action, the Panthers fell 5-0.

In singles’ play, Berwick’s Evan Boudreaux lost to Daniel Wikason 1-6, 2-6, while Riley Credeur fell to Brenen Arceneaux 5-7, 6-3, 8-10.

In doubles’ action, Berwick’s VC Caruso and Nate Furlette lost to Mike Charpenter and Mark Charpenter 1-6, 0-6; Geisler Ibert and Brady Oncale fell to Tru Ngo and Terrel Pazina 0-6, 1-6; and Jayce Rentrop and Andre' Adams lost to Brian Charpenter and Jean Malcome 7-5, 4-6, 10-4

Berwick will return to the courts Friday when it plays Central Catholic at Kemper Williams Park near Patterson beginning at 3 p.m.
