Morgan City High School 11th grade students utilized a program called “USA Test Prep” Monday afternoon. Melody Turner teaches the group during their scheduled ACT-End of Course classes every Monday through Thursday from 2:20 to 2:45 p.m. until the actual ACT exam on March 19. Students receive practice in science reasoning, reading, math and English — the main components of the ACT exam. Phase 1 of the LEAP test is March 19. This section is for fourth- and eighth-grade students only. In it, they will complete the written part of the English language arts test and the constructed response items for the math test.
Phase 2 of the LEAP takes place April 8 to 11. This also is for fourth- and eighth-graders. Students will complete the remaining English and math items as well as the entire science and social studies tests.
During the same window, April 8 to 11, iLEAP testing takes place for students in grades three, five, six and seven. The second grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills also is administered.
Robbi Gouaux, accountability manager for the St. Mary Parish School Board, said a good resource for students preparing for testing is louisianapass.org.
There, students will find the Practice Assessment and Strengthen Skills practice tests, with instructional feedback, for grades three to 12. PASS tests are designed to help students prepare for the LEAP, iLEAP, End of Course and other similar tests.
Also on louisianapass.com, Newton’s Math Classroom provides math tutorials for grades one through eight, and The Reading Runway is a resource for children in pre-kindergarten through third grade to practice the skills needed to become lifelong readers.
Parents needing assistance accessing Louisiana PASS, or who have questions can call Gouaux at 337-836-6035.
In addition to the Louisiana PASS resources, some non-instructional things parents can do to help students prepare for testing include talking to the students about the test ahead of time and trying to relieve stress about the test. Parents also can help by making sure the child gets a good night’s rest and eats breakfast the morning of the test, Gouaux said.
