IBERIA PARISH -- A two vehicle crash at 5:32 p.m. Saturday on La. 85 near La. 674 left two people dead, according to a news release from Tfc. Stephen Hammons, Louisiana State Police Troop I public affairs officer.

According to investigating troopers, 24-year-old Joel Morvant of New Iberia, was driving a 1994 Mazda 929 south on La. 85. Morvant was attempting to pass another southbound vehicle when he struck a northbound 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 54-year-old Gregory Landry of Lafayette, head-on.

Morvant, who was restrained, died as a result of his injuries, the report stated. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish coroner.

A passenger in his vehicle, 27-year-old Cody Snyder of New Iberia, was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Landry’s vehicle caught fire after the crash and troopers are still working to determine if he was restrained. Landry was also pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish coroner.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Last year, 62 percent of the fatal crashes investigated by Troop I involved some form of impairment.
