MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Lady Tigers won its first District 8-4A contest with a 13-1 victory against South Terrebonne in five innings Tuesday.
With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in district play.
No individual statistics were available.
The Lady Tigers will return to action Thursday on the road when they face Vandebilt Catholic in a 4 p.m. contest.
Lady Eagles rout
Central Catholic used an eight-run third inning to blow open a close ball game in an 11-1 Central Catholic win.
The Lady Eagles, who had entered the bottom of the third inning with a 2-1 lead, scored eight runs in the frame for a 10-1 advantage after three innings.
The Lady Eagles added a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game.
Megan Landry led the Lady Eagles with two hits, including a triple, as well as two RBIs and a run, while Kimberly Russo added two hits, including a triple, as well as two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Other top contributors included Bridgette Swan, two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run; Celine Flores, two hits, two runs and an RBI; Brittany Longman, two hits, including a double and two runs; Caroline Byrne, two hits, two stolen bases and a run; and Hailee Thomas, an RBI.
Longman (6-2 overall, 1-0 in District 8-1A) earned the win as she surrendered an earned run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles (12-2) will return to action today when they host Riverside, Class 2A’s fifth-ranked squad in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings today at 5 p.m.
North Vermilion run-rules Lady Panthers
In a battle of top 10 teams in Class 3A, No. 8 North Vermilion got the best of No. 5 Berwick in a 12-2 victory in five innings.
Both teams entered the contest ranked in the top 10 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A power rankings released prior to Tuesday’s action.
While Berwick struck for two runs in the top of the second, North Vermilion responded with six in the bottom of the frame as well as three more in the third, two runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to end the ball game.
Berwick was limited to four hits in the loss, while its defense committed five errors.
At the plate, Olivia Gilbert and Alexis Kates each finished 1-for-2 with an RBI apiece, while Hayley Girard and Shelby Bergeron each finished 1-for-2 with a run.
Bergeron suffered the loss as she surrendered nine runs in three innings of work.
North Vermilion pounded out 10 hits in the win.
Berwick (9-6 overall, 2-1 in District 9-3A) will return to action Thursday when it hosts Hahnville, Class 5A’s second-ranked squad in the latest power rankings and the 2012 5A runner-up, in a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
Kaplan eases by Patterson
Kaplan High, the No. 3 ranked squad in Class 3A, run-ruled Patterson, the No. 10 seed, 14-0 in five innings in District 9-3A action in Kaplan Tuesday. The squad was held hitless in the loss.
Taylor Hall suffered the loss for Patterson.
The Lumberjills slip to 12-3 overall and 0-3 in District 9-3A action. The squad will return to district action Thursday when it hosts Abbeville in a 6 p.m. contest.
