Alex LaVoie, above, stopped in Baldwin at Mary’s RV Park on La. 83 Tuesday night along his “Ride Across America.” His ride is a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, an initiative that provides a complete rehabilitation effort for veterans as they recover and transition back to civilian life. LaVoie’s love for bicycling included many venues and events. He retired in 2012 at age 70 and he and his wife Helen sold their home, purchased an RV and embarked from St. Augustine, Florida, Alex on his bike and Helen driving the RV. They’ll pass through many small towns and large cities as they make their way through Dallas, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, Salt Lake City, Utah and end their adventure in Seattle, Washington. Helen LaVoie is interviewing and photographing wounded military personnel along the route with hopes of publishing a book on the entire ride and the people they meet along the way. The Lavoies hope to raise $100,000 over the four months they expect the ride to take. More information can be found at www.joinalex.com.
