Twelve high school teams will converge at Geisler Stadium in Berwick Friday for the annual John Melvin Relays.
The field consists of host Berwick as well as Patterson, Morgan City, Central Catholic, and Centerville, Hanson, West St. Mary, Franklin, Catholic High of New Iberia, Jeanerette, Westgate and South Terrebonne.
Field events begin at 3:30 p.m., while track events will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
Of the field, Berwick track and field coach Paul Gilder said Franklin has a solid boys’ squad. He noted that Franklin’s Cedric Paul has a season-best throw of 57 feet, 10 inches in the shot put, while Paul has tossed the discus 149 feet and the javelin, 163 feet, 7 inches.
Gilder said Catholic High of New Iberia features Gavin Gautreaux, who has a season-best jump of 15-feet, 1-inch in the pole vault, while West St. Mary’s Gentrell Wells has a season-best throw of 39 feet, 5 inches in the girls’ shot put.
Also, Westgate features Aaliyah Walker (12-feet, 6-inches) and Jordan Courtois (11-feet) in the pole vault.
“It should be a very competitive meet,” Gilder said.
The meet is named in memory of former Berwick High School track standout John Melvin, who was killed years ago in a motorcycle accident on his way to track practice at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He still holds Berwick records, individually in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter and as a member of the 4x200 meter relay team.
Melvin also was a member of the Berwick football and baseball teams.
