Jessie Jones, Jr. was born on Friday, April 19, 1935 to Margie Turner Jones and Jessie Jones Sr. He was one of four children born to this union. Jessie Jr., was reared by his grandparents, Reverend Willie and Victoria Gouta on Swan Plantation in Centerville, La.
In 1957, he enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge.
Professionally, Jessie Jr., began his employment by working for Cefalu Cleaners in Morgan City as a truck driver. He later began working for Columbian Chemical Company in 1975. While being employed there, he served as one of the first minority Presidents of the local 638 union. He was one of the voices that allowed many to begin their employment with Columbian Chemical. Jessie Jones, Jr., fought hard for workers’ rights, advanced pay, and benefits for its union employees. In 2000, after working 25 years, Jessie retired. In 1977, he invested in the funeral business, and because of that investment today Jones Funeral Home, Inc. still strives to provide unmatched funeral services to families of the St. Mary, Iberia, Terrebonne, LaFourche and Assumption Parishes. He was truly one who enjoyed helping others. Many knew Jessie Jr., as “The Governor,” “Paw,” or just simply “Mr. Jessie.” He was a lover of dressing well and sports, both football and baseball.
The life and legacy of Jessie Jones, Jr. will forever be remembered and cherished in the hearts of his wife, Janis V. Jones of Verdunville, La.; their children, Byron K. (Stephanie) Jones of Berwick, La. and Andre’ A. Jones of Franklin, La.; his grandchildren, Liltasha (Rollie) Jones Steele of Mobile, AL and Quenton B.
